One major story in Miami County last year was Always and Furever’s attempt to expand their facility in the county, which was denied by Miami County Commissioners in May. In October, the city of Osawatomie completed the sale of their pound facility to Always and Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary, who had been running the shelter as a “no kill” facility since 2019. We’ll tell you about what we consider to be the number one story in the county, the massive power outage that left Osawatomie in the dark for several days following a storm in late October that had city officials scrambling to find a new transformer, which they did, in record time.
Another big story… voters turned down a quarter cent sales tax for renovations and expansion of the Miami County Courthouse. The courthouse is 125 years old, and the need for more space was heightened last year when it was announced that the 6th Judicial District would be receiving two new judgeship positions. Official have said they may have to fund renovations with increased property taxes.
