A rash of carbon monoxide deaths in the midwest recently has fire officials preaching the importance of having a carbon monoxide detector in your home. Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas that is created from improper burning of fuel and it can kill you and your family. Ottawa Fire Department Fire Prevention Coordinator Lieutenant Mike Wilson says having smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms is crucial:

He adds that if you don’t own your home talk to your landlord about both the smoke detectors and the carbon monoxide alarms. They are happy to work with that person to get the alarms installed. Four-hundred-twenty people die and more than 100,000 visit the emergency room each year from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.
