Governor Laura Kelly will deliver the annual State of the State Address tonight, January 10th, to a Joint Session of the Kansas Legislature. Monday, in the first day of the Legislative Session, Kelly, alongside a bi-partisan group of Kansas lawmakers, revealed a tax cut proposal. At the start of the day, Kelly, Republican State Senators John Doll and Rob Olson, Independent State Senator, Dennis Pyle, and Senate Democratic Leader Dinah Sykes hosted a conference to announce a comprehensive tax cut proposal that the group believes would save Kansans more than $1 billion over three years.
These Legislators describe their proposal as unlike any other tax plan being proposed this session. Saying it will provide relief on state property taxes, eliminate taxes on social security, increase the standard deduction, provide relief to working families in need of child care, create a back to school state sales tax holiday, and immediately ax the state sales tax on groceries, diapers, and feminine hygiene products. The State of the State address will be presented at 6:30 tonight.
