With mother nature blasting us with arctic air and sub zero temperatures the next several days, staying warm is on everyone’s mind. Bitter cold like this keeps former Ottawa Fire Chief, Tim Mathias, says it keeps firefighters awake at night, knowing that times like this are prime time for house fires. Those fires caused by people just trying to stay warm. He says one of the biggest problems is space heaters:
He adds that new space heaters are equipped with a safety measure so that when they tip over, they shut off. He also suggests not using your oven as a source of heat and not to leave any open flames, like candles burning at night. A reminder that the Ottawa Fire Department also has smoke detectors available to residents, free of charge, to anyone wanting or needing them.
