The Kansas House and Senate passed the tax plan unveiled by Republican leaders Tuesday, January 16th. The Senate passed House Bill 2284 with a 25-11 vote. The legislation includes a flat tax rate on income and reductions or complete elimination of taxes on property, social security, and food sales. However, Governor Kelly has said she would veto a flat tax:
They have sent the Bill the Governor. Legislators noted that 27 votes would be needed in the Senate to override a veto by the Governor, as well as 83 votes in the House. Most of the provisions have been inserted into the Bill to appease Governor Kelly, but she’s been outspoken against a flat tax rate.
