A major gas leak in south Ottawa yesterday, January 30th, forced the evacuation of residents in the area, as a precaution. Just before noon, the call came in of a gas main that had been ruptured at the intersection of 2nd and Willow. The gas leak was severe enough, the decision was made to evacuate residents from 2nd to 3rd Streets, from Ash to Maple, as a precaution. Ottawa Police officers and Ottawa Fire Department personnel went door-to-door to clear residences in the area. Ottawa Interim Fire Chief, Shawn Dillon:
The leak was caused by a boring machine being used to install fiber internet in the area. Emergency Management activated an integrated public alert and warning system in an attempt to caution people from driving in the area, or returning to their homes. Once the leak was contained, Fire Department personnel went door-to-door with gas monitors as a final precaution before residents were allowed to return home.
