With the spring like weather this week, it’s hard to even remember the extreme cold that affected the area a few short weeks ago. During that cold, the Franklin County United Way, First Baptist Church and other organizations teamed up to open a shelter for those that are homeless. Through some amazing volunteer work, that shelter was able to be open for nearly a week during the cold. However, United Way Director Leigh Hanson says it was about more than keeping people warm:

Lee called it an incredible effort by the community to get the shelter open and in place for as long as it was, and they never lacked for food, blankets, air mattresses or any volunteers to man the shelter. She says planning for next winter is already underway.
