Many more Kansas municipalities are reporting that residents are receiving fraudulent phone calls attempting to get people to pay past due utility bills. The caller states they are from the city utility department and are attempting to collect past due utility bills. There haven’t been any reported calls such as this in Ottawa yet, but….it could happen and city officials want to a remind you that city employees will never call to collect a past due payment to avoid shut off of services. If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be working on behalf of your city regarding utility shut-offs, please hang up the phone and do not provide them with any personal information. If you do receive such a call, please consider reporting it to the police department and the city the caller says they are representing. This is a scam. Don’t give any information to anyone making such a call.
