The cold weather rule will come to an end tomorrow, March 31st. That means Kansans who are behind in electric and natural gas utility bills will be subject to disconnection of service unless they contact their utility company to make arrangements. The cold weather rule, 12 month payment plan, requires an initial payment of only one 12th of the overdue amount, one 12th of the current bill and any reconnection fees on the account. The balance is billed in equal payments over the next 11 months in addition to the regular monthly bill.
In the Ottawa area, the cold weather rule applies to Kansas Gas Service, but not the City of Ottawa Electric Utility. If you are behind in your gas payments, call Kansas Gas. If you are behind in electric utility payments to the city of Ottawa, call City Hall and ask them what options are available to you.
