Wednesday night May 8th, just before 10:00, the Garnett Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire within the city. Garnett Fire Chief, Wes Skillman, arrived less than 2 minutes after the initial call came out. He says he observed fire and smoke showing from the home. Upon initial investigation, it was found that the fire had burned a hole through the exterior wall. Chief Skillman was able to slow the spread of the flames with a fire extinguisher. The first engine arrived on scene within 5 minutes of the initial call. Firefighters pulled a hose line and continued extinguishing the fire. Crews then gained entry into the home to check for any fire extension inside. Captain Ray and firefighter Allen Rademaker were able to rescue a dog from the home. Chief Skillman and firefighter Rademaker also rescued a cat from the home.

Firefighters were able to confine the fire to one room. The occupant of the home is receiving assistance from Red Cross at this time. Mutual Aid was received from Welda, Anderson County EMS and Garnett Police.
