Officials at Trojan Elementary in Osawatomie say students were never in any danger recently, when an increased police presence in the days following a perceived threat, prompted concern from some parents when a modified lockdown was put in place.

Osawatomie Police Chief, David Stuteville, says that a parent in crisis, living in Ottawa, had made statements about wanting to go to Trojan Elementary to see his child, which prompted the modified lockdown. Stuteville says, out of an abundance of caution, it was decided to place the school on modified lockdown until law enforcement had the opportunity to make contact with the individual and check his mental status. He also says he understand parents concerns about not being notified immediately; however, the safety of the students made that necessary. His statement said the district is working with the Osawatomie Police Department to ensure that students at both schools are safe and secure, and that included an increased police presence through the end of last week, as a precautionary measure.
