Governor Laura Kelly welcomed foster teens and families to the signing of a bill offering Kansas teens choice in their custody situations. The governor held a ceremonially signing for House Bill 2536 at the Statehouse Tuesday, establishing the support, opportunity, unity, and legal family permanency option for teens aging out of the state’s foster care system. The Soul Family Bill allows those teens to choose their own adult custodian to seek permanency with.
The Soul Family Option means young people who are aging out of foster care, will be empowered to select the circle of caring adults who will help them as they move into adulthood. The adults would agree to serve as legally recognized caregivers, not just during the young person’s transition from foster care to adulthood, but for the rest of their lives.
