The Juvenile Intake and Assessment Services Area within the former Juvenile Detention Center in Ottawa is now a little brighter place thanks to the efforts of two Ottawa student artists. Graci Campbell and Makena Ranzenberger, seniors at Ottawa High School were identified by Stefani Britton, who works with Sparkwheel as two creative and responsible minds who would be great to design and see this project through. The projects aim was to soften the institutional environment and provide a more welcoming space.
Over the course of the spring 2024 semester, the students planned and executed a floor-to-ceiling design that not only showcased their artistic abilities but also reflected their dedication and hard work. The final mural, a testament to the students’ creativity and commitment, now serves as a beacon of hope and positivity in an otherwise stark environment. It’s hoped that the impact of this student-created mural will continue to inspire and uplift those who pass through the juvenile intake area for many years.
Community corrections moved from the franklin county annex to the former juvenile detention center in december. The move aimed to provide enhanced security, confidentiality, and improved facilities for both staff and clients.
