An ATM theft in Garnett yesterday morning, May 22nd, led to a high speed pursuit in Ottawa. Early yesterday morning, Ottawa police were notified of a theft in Garnett and the suspect vehicle was headed toward Ottawa at a high rate of speed. Ottawa officers positioned themselves along likely routes and located the vehicle and attempted to stop it, but it fled through Ottawa. Due to the high speed, the pursuit was terminated and information sent to surrounding agencies. According to the Lawrence Police Department’s facebook page, the suspect vehicle was spotted entering Lawrence at a high rate of speed around 5:30 yesterday morning, but was quickly lost. It was later found unoccupied at the Kwik Shop at 23rd and Harper Streets.

Based on information discovered during the investigation, Ottawa officers have identified suspects and will forward charges to the Franklin County Attorney’s office and request arrest warrants. Police Chief Adam Weingartner says he is confident they will be captured and wish the officers that encounter them a safe outcome, as they are likely armed and clearly will do anything to avoid capture.

The suspects were not named as Ottawa Police continue to work with Garnett and Lawrence police to coordinate the investigation and build a strong case against the suspects for prosecution.
