The turkey population is growing in Emporia. Recently, a batch of baby turkeys were discovered near Newman Regional Hospital and while some people may want to interact with the new hatchlings, Wildlife Biologist Alex Lyon says residents should keep 5 to 10 feet away from the babies and adult turkeys, and under no circumstances try to feed them:
Lyon says the adult turkey’s presence within the city limits is a “unique situation” noting that wild turkey numbers have been in decline as of late. With that in mind, he says it’s likely the turkeys may begin to make their way out of the city and into the country where the habitat is more suitable for them.
