The Kansas Highway Patrol has released data from the Memorial Day Weekend holiday period, which ran from this past Friday through Memorial Day Monday. They report working one fatal non-DUI crash with three non DUI related fatalities during the holiday reporting period. DUI arrests were slightly up from last year with 21. Speeding citations up from 750 to 840 this year. Seat belt citation also up over 25% compared to last year.

There was one DUI related fatality crash in our area. It was worked by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, not the Highway Patrol so, it did not show up on their data. It happened Sunday morning near I-35 and Sunflower Road. Seventy-six-year-old Sherry Pena died in the accident. The driver of the car causing the crash, 39-year-old Jason Brumley was arrested for DUI and taken to the Johnson County Detention Center.

Remember, if you have to drink, don’t get behind the wheel of a car, designate a driver and help everyone arrive safe to their destination.
