Legendary rocker Alice Cooper has officially announced his intent to run for President of the United States and, I would say that it’s safe to say that that’s what American politics needs; more rock and roll. Now, understand that the presidential bid is only satirical. It’s something the rock icon has been doing every four years since he launched the song “Elected,” back in 1972. His promo video fits right in:
Despite his presidential bid, Cooper doesn’t actually think musicians and politics should mix. In a recent interview he says that musicians should shut up and keep their politics to themselves and be humanitarians, use their money to help people who can’t help themselves, but when they tell you who to vote for, it’s an abuse of power. He says they aren’t any smarter than anyone else, if anything, they are dumber and by telling fans not to think for themselves it becomes all about them. He reminds people that rock and roll is freedom, and that’s not freedom.
