Two fires over the weekend were caused by lightning. The first was reported by 33-year-old Andrew Callhan of Richmond, who called to report a barn on fire after it was suspected to have been struck by lightning during a storm. It became fully engulfed and by the time firefighters arrived to put out the flames, it was completely destroyed.
The other fire occurred when a tank battery was struck by lightning. Tank batteries hold the oil and salt water from oil produced by oil wells. The huge fire that ensued lit up the sky. The Cutler Township Fire Department, along with the Pottawatomie Township, Osawatomie and Wellsville Fire Departments all responded and eventually were able to suppress the flames.
