Miami County Commissioners have approved a plan to improve security at the court clerk’s office inside the Miami County Courthouse. Commissioners approved a bid from Legacy Contractors to make security improvements for $49,420. The project involves adding ballistic glass to protect court staff members, similar to what recently was done at the Miami County Clerk’s office inside the Miami County Administration Building across the street from the courthouse. It also will add a secure interior door with security card access, and the outside door to the hallway will be removed to allow easier access for members of the public and eliminate the current issue of the door hitting people in tight quarters. The funding will come out of the county’s building reserve fund.
Last fall, Miami County voters rejected a quarter cent sales tax to renovate the courthouse. Now commissioners are focusing on just making needed repairs to the building. Some of those include the roof, windows, HVAC system, electrical system, security, technology and a lack of space, especially after the 6th judicial district gained two new judgeship positions last year.
