Franklin County officials say a recent cyber attack may have affected some information on county residents, including health information held by the county health department and the county adult detention center. In a lengthy letter on their website, they say the attack was discovered on May 20th and they have cooperated with federal authorities and a nationally recognized digital forensics team to secure the network and investigate what happened. At this time, the county has determined that the data may contain the following types of information: name, address, social security number, date of birth, diagnosis information, treatment information, medical record number, vaccination information, dates of service, medication information, health insurance identification number and/or other health insurance information.

The county’s investigators searched dark web sources and found no indication that any personal information that the county maintains had been released or offered for sale as a result of this incident.  As a precautionary measure, the county urges potentially impacted individuals to take appropriate steps to protect their personal information by reviewing and monitoring any account statements, free credit reports and health insurance explanation of benefits forms for unauthorized or suspicious activity. If you have any questions, they urge you to call the county courthouse and they will point you to the right people.
