The next scary thing in your life…..giant killer wasps. They have arrived in Kansas. Horticulture experts at Kansas State University say Kansans should be ready for run-ins with the killer wasps as they are beginning to build nests in lawn and garden areas. Up to two and a half inches long, with reddish wings and long legs, black belly and yellow stripes, and readied with a barbed stinger looking for a victim to paralyze. My god, stay inside, lock the windows and doors! Don’t let the kids out! Oh, wait a minute. They are hunting locust and cicadas, not humans? Whew!
They attack and paralyze the cicadas with their stinger and carry them back to the nest or burrow, which can be found along sidewalks and flower beds around the house. Good news, they are not going to bother you, more than they can be a bit scary and intimidating. Experts with K-State say they shouldn’t be around much longer, should be gone by September.
