Franklin County officials now know who was behind the cyber attack on May 19th, that involved the theft of protected health information including the protected health information of individuals who had previously received services from the county health department and the county adult detention center, stored on its network. Working with the FBI, county investigators searched dark web sources and found no indication that any personal information that the county maintains had been released or offered for sale as a result of the incident. However, since then, the Rhysida Ransom Ware group has claimed responsibility and says 6.5 terabytes of information was stolen.
Rhysida is notorious for stealing information and is behind the attack at the Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, the British Library, as well as other high-profile attacks on government and healthcare institutions around the world. Rhysida is believed to be based out of Russia or some other middle European country. The investigation in Franklin County is ongoing.
