It’s the stuff of nightmares. Thousands of giant spiders crawling all over the place, coming in your yard, your house, blocking the roads. Nightmare…or reality? From August to October, tarantulas thousands of them, will make their way across the Colorado border into Kansas looking for mates. Sounds scary but, this particular group of tarantulas, even though they may have 4 to 5 inch leg span, are not looking to harm humans, they are tame… kind of. If you happen to be out camping or hiking and you run across tarantulas, don’t mess with them, and they wont mess with you. However, if you do, they can bite, hard! Their venom feels like an intense bee sting. They come out about an hour before sunset to find a mate, and once they do the deed, males only live two to three months longer, that is, if the female doesn’t eat them first…
Wildlife officials caution everyone to give the tarantulas space and avoid contact of any kind.
