Members of the public will have the opportunity to weigh in on a 2025 Garnett City Budget on August 27th, that raises an additional $30,000 in property taxes and boosts overall spending by $2.4 million, while exceeding the “revenue neutral” tax rate. City Manager Travis Wilson says primary targets included in this year’s budget include a major wastewater line project for which the city hopes to acquire grant assistance, refurbishing of baseball fields at Lake Garnett to help drainage and replacement of bleachers at the legion baseball field. Another city road project is also planned for the 2025 work year as well.
Overall, the 2025 budget document outlines about $16.5 million in total planned spending for the coming year – about $2.4 million more than project for 2024 – with a mill levy that exceeds the statutory “revenue neutral rate.” This year the assessed valuation for the city is 33.4 million dollars, up about $1.5 million from last year due primarily to increasing property values. The budget hearing will begin at 5:30 prior to the regularly scheduled City Commission Meeting on August 27th at City Hall.
