Anderson County Commissioners are conducting the annual effort to collect back taxes from county taxpayers. A public notice ran in last week’s Anderson County Review. Taxpayers owed over 9% more in delinquent taxes – $423,973 on 470 properties in 2023 compared to $388,095 in 2022. The publication in the newspaper is designed as an incentive for those who owe taxes to pay up before the notice date – a method undertaken for decades and generally accepted as a solid means of convincing late payers to pay up before hand. County officials say additional late payers often pay after the publication of the first notice, hoping they can be deleted from the list in future publications. The list is published on three consecutive weeks. Properties that are part of the list are also charged additional fees to cover the costs of processing and publication.
What the list doesn’t’ take into account is the recent increase in property values in Anderson County. A tight supply of available housing continued to drive home prices and property values higher.
