We told you last week a little about a group from First Christian Church in Garnet that makes wood toys for Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. The toys are placed in a “make a hug” bag along with some markers. The bags are handed out in the ER waiting rooms to families and provide a fun and safe project for the children to work on to distract them from growing impatient and have helped play a role with children with mental disorders and other challenges with a safe, fun and creative activity.
Over the years, they have produced over 26,000 wooden toys for the hospital. That takes time, money and supplies. Member Darwin Hamilton says they have a great group of people helping with that. Wood is donated by a local business, including the Former Kids Creations, Brad Fleming of Fleming Hardwood, Merle and Noreen Dueck, aka The Carpenter and Sons, and other individuals. He says they have to replenish tools and supplies themselves. Interested? The group meets every other Monday at 8:30 in the morning and Wednesday at 1:30 in the afternoon. They are always looking for people to join the fun. If interested, give us a call at KOFO and we will put you in touch with the right people.
