A crash on I-35 yesterday afternoon, September 4th, looked and was reported a bit worse than it actually was. A call came in just before 3:00 yesterday afternoon of an accident at southbound mile marker 200 of a multi-car accident on the highway, with cars possibly trapped under a truck. When deputies arrived, they found that a BMW, driven by 73-year-old Randy Sylvester of Bedford, Indiana, was southbound when he braked hard for an unknown reason. A semi truck pulling a fully loaded car hauler trailer, driven by 42-year-old Anthony Christianson, of Overland Park, swerved to the right to avoid a collision, went off the roadway to the right, overcorrected, causing the truck to roll on it’s side. More than one car on the carrier dislodged from the trailer. The truck blocked both lanes of southbound I-35.
Christianson was taken to Overland Park Regional Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Sylvester was not injured in the crash. The truck blocked both southbound lanes for about an hour and a half while law enforcement worked to clear the scene and a wrecker service worked to right the truck. The highway was back open just after 5:00 yesterday afternoon.
