People have been asking for it and the city of Osawatomie Public Works Department has issued notice of upcoming mosquito fogging treatment. That will begin this evening, September 5th, about 8:00. They recommend keeping pets and children out of the yard for at least an hour after treatment just as a precaution, and ask that you close your windows before treatment begins. They only treat in the late evening, usually between the hours of 8:00 and midnight after most other desirables, like butterflies and bees have “gone home” for the night. The dosage of adulticide used in treatment is specially formulated to target those ultra-lightweight mosquitoes, and they are 100x more susceptible to it than the average weight honey bee.
You can do a lot to help fight the mosquito population. The best thing you can do is locate and eliminate standing water sources in your yard. Things such as gutters, wading pools, bird baths, old tires, wheelbarrows, boats, garbage can lids, livestock dishes and draining water standing in low areas.
