If you drive out by 7th Street Grocery on 1600 Road west of Garnett, you’ll notice a new business is building in the area. A special use permit, was granted by the Anderson County Commission recently for the construction of a 60×140-foot building with plans to house a surplus store there. They also plan to drop the speed limit on the county road surrounding the area.
Increases in traffic produced in the area by a number of developments in recent years – among them 7th Street Grocery, truck traffic to the Eastern Kansas Agri Energy Ethanol Plant and others have bumped up traffic on that section of roadway. The issue is, the road is also frequented by horse-drawn and farm implement traffic. A neighbor told commissioners they’d like to see the drive of the new business located with some buffer area between it and her property. That discussion led to an eventual plan to reduce the speed limit from that area west to the nearest road corner, with a plan for incoming traffic to reduce speed from the current 55 mph to 40 mph past the area, then down to 30 mph when entering the city limits of Garnett.
