A rare coin that three sisters inherited, has sat in a bank vault for more than 40 years. That coin is expected to bring more than $500,000 at auction next month. The coin, a dime, struck at the U. S.Mint in San Francisco in 1975 is missing the “s” mint mark for San Francisco. It’s one of just two known to exist. The other one sold at a 2019 auction for $456,000. While serious coin collectors have long known about the existence of these two rare dimes, their whereabouts had remained a mystery since the late 1970’s. The mint in San Francisco made more than 2.8 million special uncirculated “proof” sets in 1975 that featured six coins and were sold for $7. Collectors a few years later discovered that two dimes from the set were missing the mint mark.
Their parents bought the coin in 1978 for $18,000 and saw it as a financial safety net. The coin will remain on display in Tampa until the auction closes in late October. Only two are known of and there is a remote chance there could be others out there, but since they were in proof sets, no chance it could be in any change you get from Walmart or the gas station…or could they?? Hmmm..worth a look. I betcha you check the dimes in your pocket right now!
