Fifty-four years ago, October 2nd, 1970, two charter planes carrying the Wichita State University football team left Denver, heading to Logan, Utah. One plane made it, the other….didn’t. It crashed into the side of a mountain. Thirty-one people died, 8 miraculously survived the crash. Rick Stevens was a junior offensive lineman and was one of those survivors. He talks about being carried away from the wreckage by some construction workers, just in time:
There is still wreckage from the crash on that mountain in Colorado, and several plaques and signs honoring those who died. Every year, WSU remembers the crash. A memorial will be held this morning at 9:00 at the Memorial Sculpture at the University entrance at Memorial Drive and Hillside.
