Having a good handle on food safety is important.
A Kansas State University Food Scientist says they are taking the time to educate people about reducing the risk of food poisoning. Have you ever wondered about the date markings on your food, and just how long the food is actually safe to eat after that date? K-State Food Safety Advisor Karen Blakeslee says the “best by” or “use by” dates are mainly for the quality of the product and not an indication that the product has become unsafe.
Now, go check the fridge for that spicy mustard that’s been sitting her for a few years and toss it out. Oh, and that jar of jelly in your grandma’s fridge dated 1988? Probably should toss that one too. Blakeslee does say to trust your instincts and if in doubt, throw it out.
