Governor Laura Kelly signed a proclamation earlier this month declaring November as Homelessness Awareness Month. Kelly says she is recognizing organizations, service providers and advocates in the state who work to address homelessness.
Locally, the Franklin County Coalition to End Homelessness, in cooperation with Hope House has organized a cold weather shelter for those who are homeless. The shelter will be at First Baptist Church in Elliott Hall on nights where the temperature drops below 20 degrees. At a recent meeting, nearly two dozen people received training for nights where the shelter will be open this winter. If you missed the meeting and would like to volunteer or help in any way, please visit the Franklin County Coalition To End Homelessness facebook page and leave a message. They will get back to you promptly on how you can help, whether that be by donating supplies, or at the shelter itself.
Kelly’s proclamation says it’s vital for residents, businesses, and government leaders at all levels to unite in creating sustainable housing solutions, reducing stigmas, and promoting dignity for all individuals experiencing homelessness.
