A Louisburg native has independently produced, written and directed a slow burn psychological thriller movie called “Finding Joy.” Actor and filmmaker, Valri Bates, says the movie explores repercussions of compartmentalized trauma in relation to sleep conditions, and it showcases firsthand counts of Bates’ personal struggles with sleep paralysis.

The story follows a woman who is a PTSD survivor and aspiring artist, as buried childhood trauma begins to resurface in the form of sleep paralysis and recurring dreams. She reluctantly enlists professional help from sleep psychologist and sleep technologist. The woman’s relationship with her best friend and roommate flourishes in unexpected ways and is ultimately put to the test as she unravels the truth of her past.

“Finding Joy” is her first feature-length independent film, and it will have its KC premiere with cast and crew at 6:30 tomorrow evening, November 14th, at Screenland Armour Theatre in North Kansas City. Valeri is a Louisburg High School graduate and her father is a police officer in town.
