Garnett’s Dunkard Brethren Church has partnered with Operation Christmas Child, a project of international relief organization Samaritan’s Purse, to lend a helping hand to children in need all over the world. Project Leader Karen Edgecomb says the local site is a drop off location for Operation Christmas Child, collecting shoe boxes of Christmas items for children in need, as part of the Worldwide Christian Outreach Program. She says this year they have collected 216 boxes from the Garnett area.
Worldwide, since 1990, 220 million shoe boxes have been delivered to more than 170 countries. Along with the shoe boxes, each child also receives “The Greatest Gift” story booklet, telling the gospel of Jesus Christ. The shoe boxes can be filled with toys, school supplies, hygiene items, personal care items, and personalized notes from the donors. Edgecomb says the mission is to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children around the world. She says the church hopes to build on the program for next year, and have more people to join them in packing shoe boxes.
