Drones. Cool technology, but lately they have received some bad publicity. Large drones have been seen hovering over areas in New Jersey and around the country. A couple weeks ago, we had one flying around our neighborhood, hovering over my yard and my neighbors back yard. He wasn’t happy and threatened to shoot it down if it didn’t leave quickly. The question is…can you shoot down a drone? The simple answer is, yes, but it is a crime. Criminal damage to property and discharging a firearm in the city limits. According to the FAA, drone operators are protected; but, FAA regulations do not give homeowners protections against drone pilots. They say there is no expectation of privacy to the airspace above your house.
Drone use to deliver packages are becoming a big thing in larger cities and experts say, seeing drones is going to become more common. So, the next time you think about shooting the drone flying over you house or neighborhood, think twice. That one shot could land you in jail.
