Since the City of Ottawa has proposed the sale of Proximity Park to Lightfield Energy to build a tech campus, data center and more, some are questioning the company’s need to build their own power generation plant. Why can’t ottawa supply the energy they need? City Manager Brian Silcott says the power needs at the facility are far more than Ottawa is capable of producing:
The power supply requirements at such facilities depend on the data center size. The hyperscale data center Lightfield is proposing may need up to 100 megawatts. Servers consume the most power in a data center due to their processing requirements and cooling needs. The cooling system also often requires a large portion of a data center’s total energy consumption for optimal temperature and humidity.
