The Anderson County Commission recently approved rate increases for the county landfill and transfer station as officials try to meet the mounting costs of running the local landfill. Right now, most trash from Anderson County is trucked to a landfill in Allen County. The expenses at the county recycling center for newspaper, cardboard, aluminum and some plastics far outweigh the revenue generated. Scrap metal generates the most money.

Fees going up include brush from $6.00 to $20.00. The minimum dumping fee from $5.00 to $8.00. Transfer floor costs from $45.00 a ton to $50.00, and construction and demolition from $27.00 a ton to $40.00.

Commission Chair Les McGhee is afraid these prices might force many to dump their trash illegally. It costs the county just over $26.00 a ton to dump at the Allen County site and they average 23 ton loads. But, that does not cover the cost of fuel, equipment, or labor
