The City of Osawatomie broke down just how much time and money was involved in the clean up of last weeks snowstorm. Between January 4th and January 9th, winter storm Blair required a much higher amount of labor and supplies compared to previous winter weather events in recent years. Two hundred seventy-eight personnel hours, 800 gallons of magnesium chloride, 40 tons of salt, 120 tons of sand. They said the storm was a nasty combination of a lot of snow being dumped on top of a lot of ice, mixed with brutally cold temperatures that rendered many chemical pre-treatments and topical treatments ineffective.
Crews worked around the clock, including overnight shifts that required sleeping at the workshop to make sure the streets and neighborhoods were maintained to the best of their ability. As of January 9th, the winter storm event cost the city an estimated $32,141, compared to a per-event average cost of $4,037 in recent years. This figure doesn’t include labor and supplies utilized for the additional snowfall received Thursday night!
A big thank you to those men and women, not only in Osawatomie, but communities across the area, who work so hard to keep our communities safe.
