The Garnett Community Foundation will officially separate from the City of Garnett after more than a decade under city management. Foundation officials and city commissioners agreed to the split in continuation of a previous discussion about separating the non-profit, charitable giving association, from city authority. The city maintained a distance from the association since it acquired them in a resolution in 2010. Their role was to help appoint members and the board of directors. President Bonnie Dieter told commissioners that they association now had its own errors insurance policy and was operating outside the city authority anyway.

The Garnett Community Foundation’s mission is to provide a tax free structure for charitable giving from donors who want to make a financial commitment to either general or specific community projects or charities. City Attorney Terry Solander is going to write up a resolution rescinding the original 2010 city action for the commissioners to sign.
