The Food Network’s Kid Baking Championship continued last night with 12-year-old Piper Lowe from Princeton competing. In the latest challenge, the contestants had to create food inspired by an animal, with Piper replicating food for a dog. She was given steak as her animal’s food, and she took it to the next level by airbrushing the steak to make it look incredibly realistic. She even added marks to mimic grill lines and crafted butter out of fondant, which she paired with a corn syrup base to give the illusion of melted butter on the steak. The judges were thoroughly impressed, admitting they couldn’t believe the steak wasn’t real, praising Piper for her creativity and execution.
For the twist in the challenge, each contestant had to use a specific herb, and piper’s was ginger. She incorporated ginger buttercream into a brown butter blondie, dyed to look like rare and medium-rare steak. Finally, she covered it all in fondant to complete the illusion. Was Piper’s creativity and ability to create a realistic looking steak enough to advance?
…. YES! And, the producers revealed that she has been consistently discussed as a contender for the top spots throughout the season. She will be one of only 5 contestants remaining. Next episode, Monday night, February 24th at 7:00.
