
Carol Jean (Miller) Baer, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home in rural Ottawa on March 18, 2025 following a lengthy illness.
She was born on October 14, 1941, in Erie, Kansas, the daughter of Hurley E. and Martha P. (Golden) Miller. Jean attended Erie High School and graduated with the class of 1959. She married Tony G. Carter shortly after high school, they later divorced. In November of 1969, she married Melvin L. Schulz, they later divorced. On October 8, 2002, Jean was united in marriage to Glenn “Andy” Baer in Las Vegas, Nevada, he survives of the home.
During her lifetime, she worked at various locations including most recently as secretary and bookkeeper for Andy’s Wrecker and Repair.
Jean was a very talented creator of Southwest/Native American jewelry and art work, and travelled to various Native American Powwows to showcase and sell her work. In October of 2017, she was named a most honored elder for the Miami Nation. She loved country music, and travelled to numerous country shows in Kansas and Missouri, as well as attending numerous shows where family and friends were performing. In her early adult years, Jean enjoyed hunting, fishing, and farming. She was an amazing cook and loved having her large family at holiday and special event gatherings.
Along with her husband, she is survived by son Anthony “Butch” Carter (Su) of Ottawa, Kansas; son David L. Carter (Dawn) of Lawrence, Kansas; son Charles E. Schulz of Ottawa, Kansas; daughter Velma “Lori” (Schulz) Little (Johnathon) of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter Stephanie J. (Schulz) Wooge (David) of Ottawa, Kansas; son Michael E. Schulz of Belleville, Kansas; daughter Becky L. (Schulz) Cain (Brock) of Ottawa, Kansas; step-daughter Shanda Baer of Denver Colorado; twenty-three grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren with another on the way.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents and sister Louis (Miller) Jones.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Ottawa, Kansas with a private graveside service at East Hill Cemetery in Erie, Kansas.
