OTTAWA — The Ottawa school board reviewed an engineering study Monday night on what it would cost to renovate Hawthorne School. Superintendent Dean Katt said it wouldn’t be feasible for the district to do any major improvements on the building in the near future. At the minimum, bringing the school building up to code would cost at least $500,000, he said. A thorough renovation would cost approximately $1.5 million. The best option for the Hawthorne building is as administrative and other non-school uses, the study indicates. At earlier meetings, the board heard requests from a local church and ECKAN to buy the old school. However, the board chose to keep the building.
