OTTAWA — Friends and acquaintances are launching a campaign to raise $100,000 for a scholarship in Vern Chesbro’s name. Chesbro, a retired telephone executive and a long-time Republican activist, is losing his battle with cancer, said friend Tom Weigand. Chesbro has always wanted to get young people involved in politics and the scholarship for Franklin County students is an appropriate honor, Weigand said. A fundraising letter will soon be sent out and will be signed by a who’s who of Kansas elected officials, including U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts. Send donations to the Chamber Foundation, P.O.
