GARNETT — One person showed up at the Garnett City Commission’s recent public hearing on next year’s budget. Wayne Hulett told commissioners he was dissatisfied with the city’s proposed tax increase of .92 of a mill. “Anytime my bills go up, I have to do a reduction,” he said. “… Each time you need more money, you just go up the tax. As does the county. As does the school board.” City manager Joyce Martin and Mayor Mike Norman defended the tax increase, saying the city faced THE increasing cost of natural gas and other fuel, and medical insurance premiums. The Anderson County Review reported that commissioners approved the budget on 2-1 vote. Commissioner Greg Gwin voted against, saying the city could have made enough cuts to prevent any tax increase.
