GARNETT — Tis the season, and Anderson County Sheriff Jeff Hupp is issuing a warning about fall scams. Hupp told the Anderson County Review that when the fall leaves start to turn, scam artists turn up with deals for lightning rods, driveway paving and other construction cons, often targeted at the elderly. The KBI has forwarded information and photos on a handful of people connected to scams being run in recent weeks in western Kansas, he said. Homeowners should be wary of door-to-door contractors offering ”do or die” deals, he said. Such scam artists demand money up front — sometimes 50 percent of the cost, and when and if they return and they finish the job, there’s some kind of reason that it requires more work and more money. The safest options are to deal with local contractors or generally reputable companies, and not to make snap decisions under pressure from high-pressure salespeople, he said.
