GARNETT — The Garnett City Commission will have some sincere flattery for the city of Ottawa tonight. Garnett premieres its own Youth in Government program when it welcomes Anderson County High School student Chad Betts tonight. Garnett city manager Joyce Martin has been working with high school government teacher Mike Sibley to copy Ottawa’s Youth in Government program. Like his counterparts in Ottawa, Betts will be sworn in and serve on the city commission as a non-voting member and to serve as a liaison between the city and his fellow students. Martin said she’s excited that the program is off and running. Martin said she hopes to expand the program to the same scale as Ottawa, in which high school students sit on a variety of boards and commissions.
