GARNETT – Retail sales in Garnett and Anderson County continue to show strong growth, as shown by recent sales tax collection reports. Sales tax revenues from November through January were up an average of 12.5 percent in Anderson County and 13.5 percent in Garnett, with the biggest jump in December. The Anderson County Review reported that the jump for Anderson County was significantly higher than increases in surrounding counties. Typically automotive sales in Garnett produce by far the largest chunk of sales tax collections in the county. However, the paper noted that the increases also show that more people are doing other shopping locally as well. Most of the county’s one-and-a-half percent sales tax goes to pay off the bonds for the jail and law enforcement center, and most of the city’s half-cent sales tax receipts pay off improvements to the Garnett Library and the sports complex at the north edge of town.
