OTTAWA — As Ottawa school officials brace for an expected increase in the number of elementary students, the Ottawa school board approved a set of guidelines Monday night for dealing with them. The guidelines include numbers for ideal class sizes and the maximum number of students in each class, Ottawa Supt. Dean Katt said. Katt said he expects about 200 kindergarteners to be enrolled next fall. Administrators will juggle class numbers as needed and hire additionaal paraprofessionals for larger classes, he said. Another first-grade class and fifth-grade class may be added at Lincoln Elementary School, he said. To free up space at Lincoln, the district will remodel a modular classroom at Eugene Field Elementary School and move another modular from the high school to Eugene Field, he said. A class and computer lab will be moved into the modulars, he said.
