OSAWATOMIE – On a 6-2 split vote, the Osawatomie city council gave approval to Sunday liquor sales in the city recently. Nine years ago, Osawatomie voters rejected sunday sales. The Osawatomie Journal reports that council members agreed to allow Sunday sales because so many neighboring cities also allow Sunday sales. The newspaper reported council member John Farley said times have changed and that the previous public vote is no longer relevant. Council members Tamara Maichel and Ted Hunter voted against Sunday sales. She told the Journal that she supports Sunday sales but voted against because of the 2003 vote. The new ordinance is subject to a protest petition. If a valid petition is turned in, the ordinance would be on the August ballot.
